"Tropical Cyclone Weakens to Low Pressure System, Bringing Rain and Wind to Northern Coast of Australia"

In the Northern Territory of Australia, a cyclone that was bringing strong winds and rain has now diminished to a tropical low.

Tropical Cyclone Megan weakened to a tropical low on Tuesday after unleashing heavy rain and strong winds across Australia's Northern Territory. The storm, which made landfall near the remote town of Borroloola on the southwestern side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, prompted warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology of wind gusts reaching up to 130 kph (81 mph) and rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters (7.8 inches).

Despite initial plans for evacuating around 700 residents in Borroloola, the evacuation had to be called off due to adverse weather conditions preventing aircraft from landing safely. Instead, residents were advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings capable of withstanding the cyclone's force, with the Australian Defence Force standing by to assist with recovery efforts.

This event highlights the ongoing risks associated with Australia's cyclone season, which spans from November to April. Prior cyclones like Jasper and Kirrily had already impacted regions across the country, underscoring the importance of preparedness and response measures in mitigating the impact of such severe weather events.
