Virat Kohli Among the Greats with Tendulkar and Ponting
Legendary West Indies fast bowler Sir Curtly Ambrose has placed Virat Kohli in the same league as Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, praising his ability to dominate in any era
Legendary West Indies fast bowler Sir Curtly Ambrose has ranked star India batter Virat Kohli alongside Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting. Kohli is often compared to Tendulkar as one of the greatest batters for India and is nearing Tendulkar's record of most international hundreds. Currently, Kohli has 80 international centuries, just 20 behind Tendulkar's 100.
Recently, at 35 years old, Kohli surpassed Tendulkar's record of most ODI hundreds (49) by scoring his 50th century against New Zealand in the ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final. Ambrose refrained from directly comparing the two cricket legends, noting the challenge of comparing players from different eras. However, he highlighted Kohli's ability to excel in any era, similar to Tendulkar and Ponting, making him a truly exceptional player.
Ambrose said in an interview with Sports Tak, "Virat Kohli is a great man whom I admire and enjoy watching. Please don't ask me to compare him with Sachin. I believe he's a great player, and when I judge players, I don't like comparing different eras."
"But what I can say is when I assess great batsmen like Virat Kohli today, I wonder if he would have thrived in my era or earlier. I think he would have, and that's why I consider him great. Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting are also great because they could dominate any era," he added.
Kohli's Struggles in T20 World Cup 2024 ----Virat Kohli has faced a tough time in the ongoing T20 World Cup, managing just 66 runs from five innings with an average of 13.20 and a strike rate of 108.19. Despite opening alongside captain Rohit Sharma, he has yet to score big.
However, there's hope as Kohli showed improvement with scores of 24 (off 24 balls) and 37 (off 28 balls) in his last two innings, bouncing back from a slow start with just five runs in the first three matches. As India gears up to face Australia in their final Super 8 clash on Monday, June 24 at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia, all eyes will be on Kohli to regain his form in the crucial knockout stages.
